Ok I realize I’m terrible about writing down my thoughts and answering a deadline to keep up with my blog, but today I am driven to get this message out there. I was invited by my friends Chris and Wendy Regus to their church to hear a very successful business attorney speak about “Strategy” in business leadership. Chris has been acting as my business coach and I am opening my ears for once and listening to a mentor who knows much more about this topic than myself. So not to bore you with the plethora of good information I received from this talk, I will just give you the main idea and then tie it into your success in our programs here at KAI Fitness and Wellness.
During the lecture, the presenter showed us a video that you can see in its entirety on You Tube by entering, Simon Sinek: “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”. He gives a short but powerful presentation on the scientific, biological reasons people buy certain products and services and not others, even though they are almost equal in value. He uses Apple computers as an example and because I am a huge fan of their products, this caught my attention. WHY DO I buy their products, even though there are others out there that are the same in function or performance, or even better? Reflecting on this point, I thought about my product at KAI Fit. Why do people come here?
Mr. Sinek, in his TED TV talk explained the answer so simply that I almost missed it the first two times watching the presentation. However, after attending the “Strategy” lecture this weekend, his main point really hit home. In summation of the talk, he explained it like this; Most businesses know What their product is, they know How it works or is used, but when it comes to Why they make their product or service, there is a fuzzy glare of reflected thought before answering. Apple’s “Why”, according to Sinek, is that they have a passion for being innovatively first in their area of technology by offering beautiful streamlined products that are user friendly and easy to use.
In my own business, I often think about what is the main reason why some people are so successful here and others just continue to spin their wheels, (giving exhausting effort week after week without achieving their goals). After careful reflection this weekend, I feel this talk gave me the answer that is not based on psychology. In other words, some people are just more motivated for egotistical and monetary reasons. For example“, I want to be the best and strongest in the room”, or “I am not paying for this unless I get something out of it”. Instead they should use a more biological reason, such as, “I like the feeling of eating healthy and giving my 110% in my workouts”, or, “I am empowered by having control of my health and wellbeing”. Your brain’s Limbic System is responsible for the last two thoughts. Marketers and Companies like Apple know it is more important for selling to this part of a persons brain because it ensures retention and increases enthusiasm towards products.
The brain science behind this phenomenon for success towards any goal, shows us that even with those self motivated people, it is hard to keep driven and maintain enthusiasm and reasoning behind what their doing, if there are not basing their “Why’s”, on Limbic System reasoning. For an example, in the personal training and wellness makeover world, I am reminded of the “Body for Life” movement in the late 90’s. My trainer friends and I used to refer to this type of program as the “Body for 12 Weeks”. That is the amount of time you could keep a client motivated because their results would plateau in that time frame. The same is true for doing any new fitness program. That is why trainers should be switching up programs every few months like we do here at KAI Fit.
So what is the “Why” Dr. Scott, you ask? An example of reasons why we need to use safe and science based resistance training, high intensity cardiovascular exercise, and flexible full range-core based movements such as Kinesis Training, go beyond just aesthetic improvements or because it’s the new “thing” people are doing right now (Aka: fitness fads). The reason should be more like, “I would like to be part of the new movement of preventative health and wellness”. Prevention of musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease could all be good “why’s”. However, a more thoughtful reason might be, “I would like to age more gracefully and with better function than my older relatives and friends did.” In this example, I am speaking to my baby-boomer generation specifically. Although with the new generation of chronic digital device users, I cannot limit this audience to just 50-70 year olds.
